This half term our Year 7 students are eagerly practising for the French Spelling Bee. All Year 7 students learn a set of words in French and then need to spell them accurately in French against the clock.
The first round consists of our form competitions where students compete against their class peers, the top spellers in that round then face the semi-final. The semi-final and final will take place on Wednesday 14th December so look out for our top French spellers soon. Good Luck Everyone!
Here at Rosedale College we offer a broad range of extra curricular activities. These activities span sports, technology, ICT, music and art, maths, science, humanities and languages. Extra-curricular activities are widely considered valuable life experiences that are open to all students at Rosedale College. Students benefit greatly from participating in organised extra-curricular activities, they can develop positive tangible outcomes from these experiences of interacting and working with others which could benefit them in later life. Extra-curricular activities enables students to have a productive break from studies and homework, support and extend their learning in a range of subjects, improve their social skills and increase their physical fitness.
The Technology and IT Alliance offers three extra-curricular clubs, IT Club, Food Club and Technology Club. All three are very popular with the students who greatly enjoy the activities on offer. In IT students can utilise their time to engage in fun activities, catch-up on homework, extend their class studies or experience virtual reality by using the VR headsets.
In Food Technology students extend their previous studies in Food Technology, through the production of a range of healthy food products. Technology Club allows pupils to pursue their interest in Design and Technology and hone their practical skills using our fully equipped workshops or CAD/CAM equipment. Students access a range of advanced equipment, such as the laser cutter and vinyl cutter to produce products using a range of different engineering skills. At present students are currently making the circuit for their own Rear Bike light designs which involves a range of skills including soldering the components to the circuit board.
The Rosedale Hewens Academy Trust is excited to announce its Post 16 Open Evening to support all local young people in choosing the best possible pathway for success, as they work towards graduating from their secondary education. The evening will aim to guide parents, guardians, carers and prospective students through The Trust’s Post 16 offer, where they will be taken on a journey through the four colleges within The Trust and guided through the different curriculum areas, demonstrating what Post 16 teaching and learning looks like, as it is a step up from GCSE. From the wide variety of subject areas on offer, students and their families will be able to gauge the examination boards used, the modules covered in both Year 12 and 13, and will receive a comprehensive overview of what the course demands from its students.
The event promises to be informative and enlightening for all. On Friday 4th November a group of 27 Year 9 students were taken to the National Gallery as a reward for outstanding work on the French Impressionists. The students had produced PowerPoints, posters and even paintings about the lives and works of the artists so that they would appreciate the masterpieces all the more when they saw them. The journey there took the students through Trafalgar Square where they saw Nelson’s Column and the sights of performers, musicians and street artists.
Two of our art students are world finalists of the International Junk Kouture competition. Curated to shine a light on the importance of climate change through creativity and self expression, Junk Kouture, the world’s largest sustainable youth fashion competition challenges young people between the ages of 13 to 18 years to create striking and imaginative outfits out of nothing but recycled materials.
Here at Rosedale, students get the opportunity to understand Mathematics conceptually rather than rote learning. With the use of two computer suites available on the Mathematics corridor and using software such as Geogebra, Desmos and Autograph, students are able to draw graphs using them and have a better understanding of certain topics in Mathematics. Students appreciate and enjoy learning Mathematics as they get to see for themselves, what their solutions mean when solving certain problems.

From Wednesday 5th - Friday 7th October, six Year 12 students enjoyed a three-day extravanganza as part of Brunel University London’s Shakespeare on Trial trip, in collaboration with The Globe Theatre and the Royal Courts of Justice. The programme brought literature and the legal system to life by subjecting fully-realised fictional characters to in-depth examination, using Shakespeare’s The Tempest as visual and textual evidence and giving our young people an opportunity to experience both the world of the theatre and the drama and theatricality of the courtroom. The course also provided our students with the opportunity to experience what it would be like to study in a university environment, as well as visiting London’s iconic Royal Courts of Justice. Our students developed their confidence in public speaking and awareness of legal procedure, as well as critical thinking; analysing evidence; ordering ideas; formulating an argument; presenting information concisely, logically and persuasively and using an appropriate tone and register. Our students thoroughly enjoyed the Globe’s performance of The Tempest, the lectures and the mock trial at the Courts.
The start of every academic year heralds the celebration of Languages Day here at Rosedale College. Throughout the week the Languages Alliance celebrated the rich cultural diversity here within the college. In every languages lesson our students took part in activities to acknowledge, share and honour all the languages spoken and used around the world. It was an opportunity for our students to learn key facts about languages, to recognise the importance of using a variety of languages and also to learn about the origin of words.
Early morning on Thursday 25th August, staff joined our Year 11 students to celebrate the release of their GCSE results. Emotions were high because students were keen to fulfil their aspirations, which in turn would allow them to move on to the next steps in their academic journey, or pursue alternative pathways. Students have worked incredibly hard in these unprecedented times to ensure their futures were not compromised because of a global pandemic; their might and determination was second to none.
Students at Rosedale College are continuing to improve in both their attainment and achievement. The College is continuing to perform on an upward trajectory, which is a true testament to the highly motivated and committed staff we have. Our successes are visible in both academic and vocational subjects, which is indicative of our holistic approach to education. Overall, 63% of our students achieved five strong passes at GCSE including English and Mathematics, which is above the national average of 60.3%. Our English GCSE strong passes at grade 5 and above reached an impressive 70% against a national average of 61%, with Mathematics strong passes at grade 5 and above achieving 67% against a national average of 56%.

The news of the death of the Queen last week was a significant moment for all of us. On Friday morning all the Schools and Colleges in the Trust showed their respect to mark the beginning of the national period of mourning in various ways. Pupils and students reflected on the Queens’ life and in particular over 70 years, her service to our nation.
Following the announced date of the state funeral for Queen Elizabeth II, the Trust and each of its Schools and Colleges will close to mark this historic occasion on Monday 19th September 2022. The Rosedale Hewens Academy Trust will be open as usual over the next week through the national mourning period.
We understand that during this period of mourning, some of our students may experience their own sense of loss and grief both for the Queen and for people close to them that are no longer with us. If you believe your child may need some additional support at this time please do not hesitate to contact their form tutor.
Friday 15th July saw a return to the pageantry of The Rosedale Hewens Academy Trust’s Year 11 Prom at the Q Vardis and The Mallard Suite after a two-year hiatus, and it returned with a BANG!
Under the theme, ‘A Night on the Red Carpet’, our students arrived in style, dressed to impress, won academy awards for academic and personal merit and were celebrities for the night. From the grand entrances, to the sequins, sparkle, feathers, the suits and ties, the students made this year’s prom, a prom to remember.
Each student received VIP treatment. Snapshots were taken by the ever-present media and paparazzi capturing students upon arrival as they got out of their luxury cars, with the scene emulating the concours d’elegance!
The stars of the night were then ushered to the red carpet where the lights continued to flash as they experienced the glamour of a premiere, leading them to the dancefloor and the 360 photobooth.
In the midst of the enjoyment, the Prom Kings, Queens and Jokers were crowned and adorned with sashes, and, new for this year, the Academy Award winners were presented with trophies for the Kindness Award, the Einstein Award and the Best Footballer Award, amongst many others.
On this special night, we celebrated the coming together of students from all four secondary colleges and made memories to last a lifetime. Prom was a reminder that as a Trust, we have strong community ties and when we unite, it feels like a family reunion. After one of the most difficult educational journeys ever known to the world, the 2022 Year 11 cohort proved their resilience via their capacity for joy. This cohort believes in ‘all for one, and one for all’. They celebrated each other like a year group should, and their bonds are insoluble. They epitomise the Trust value of collaboration.
The Director of Post 16 would like to personally thank all of the staff and families who made this event possible, alongside showing gratitude to Nick and all the team at Q Vardis, for allowing the Trust to put on yet another epic prom night. We are already looking forward to 2023!
