On Monday 19th October 2026, Year 11 Geography students took part in an exciting river fieldwork investigation at Loughton Brook in Essex. The visit provided a valuable opportunity for students to bring their classroom learning to life while developing essential practical skills in preparation for their GCSE Geography examinations.
Throughout the day, students explored the flood risks associated with the river, investigating how the physical characteristics of the channel influence river processes and the likelihood of flooding. Working collaboratively in groups, students collected primary data at various locations along the brook, measuring channel width, channel depth and river velocity.
Using specialist equipment and geographical fieldwork techniques, students carefully gathered and recorded their findings, considering how these factors affect river discharge and flood potential. They also observed the surrounding environment, identifying river management strategies and examining land use within the drainage basin.
Our students demonstrated outstanding teamwork, enthusiasm and resilience throughout the visit. They approached each activity with maturity, followed safety procedures responsibly and showed excellent commitment to their learning.
The data collected will now be analysed in lessons to support students’ understanding of river processes and prepare them for the fieldwork component of their GCSE Geography examinations.
Well done to all our Year 11 Geography students for their excellent behaviour, positive attitudes and hard work. They were a real credit to Rosedale College!
